Schedule

DAY 1 – FRIDAY, JUNE 14

  • Pick up at Rome Airport (3 ½ hour drive to Molise)
  • We will drive to Montenero di Bisaccia and settle into our rooms.
    • Beautifully located Il Quardrifoglio is surrounded by soft rolling slopes in the middle of vineyards of the Wine Celler “Terresacre” where we can see the Adriatic Sea in the distance.
  • Welcome dinner and briefing of tour.

DAY 2 – SATURDAY, JUNE 15

  • 8am – Drive to Agnone
    • Agnone is in the center of important archaeological vestiges of the old Oscan-Samnite civilization and is sometimes called “the Athens of the Sannio” due to the large number of ruins of the Samnitic culture.
    • We will visit the Marinelli Bell Foundry.
      • The Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli is an ancient factory of bells that has been operating in Agnone for nearly a millennium. It ranks as one of the oldest family-owned companies in  the world.
    • We will also visit the Copper Museum and the Di Nucci Cheese makers and get the chance to see how the cheese is made by hand … and, of course, taste this amazing cheese.
  • 1pm Lunch at Selvaggi Staffoli Horse
  • Drive back to Agriturismo
  • Free Time
  • Cooking Class & dinner

DAY 3 – SUNDAY, JUNE 16

  • 9am – Drive to Pietrabbondante
    • Pietrabbondante’s earliest known inhabitants were the Samnites, who arrived in Pietrabbondante, then became part of the Roman colony located in Sannio, as documented by Pliny the Elder.
      • The Romans called the town “Bovianum Vetus”, little of which is known about its beginnings.
      • It became, however, a center of vital importance – when the Romans conquered the Samnites, Pietrabbondante became a place of reference for checking the Alto Molise.
      • A guide will bring us around this amazing town rich in history.
      • We will visit the Samnite Theatre.
    • We will also have the opportunity to see how Truffles are transformed and, of course, a Truffle tasting!
  • Lunch: Taverna dei Sanniti
  • After lunch, we will relax and continue our visit
  • Drive back to Agriturismo
  • Wine tasting with sommelier and food pairing with the dishes that will be made at the cooking class
  • Aperitivo
  • Cooking Class & dinner

DAY 4 – MONDAY, JUNE 17

  • After breakfast, we are off to Termoli to visit the old Port and buy fish that will be used in our cooking class.
  • Cooking Class 11am AT THE BEACH!!
  • Lunch
  • After lunch, we will take a short drive to Larino, originally settled by the Samnite and Frentani tribes of Southern Italy.
    • The city came under the control of the Oscan civilization.
    • In 217 BC, the Romans defeated Hannibal here, and it was later incorporated into the Roman Empire.
    • We will stroll in Borgo Vecchio, the new part of the city, and also visit the Roman Amphitheater, Palazzo Zappone and the Cathederal of Larino built in 1319.
  • Free Time
  • Then, we will be off to Cantina Tienimenti Grieco for a wine tasting and visit of the wine cellar with a sommelier. We will also taste some local cheeses and salume!
  • Aperitivo around 630pm
  • Dinner, Gelato and free time!

DAY 5 – TUESDAY, JUNE 18

  • RELAXATION DAY!!!
  • 8am – Pick up (1 1/4 hour drive)
  • We will spend the whole day at Tremiti Islands … sun bathing and relaxing…
  • We will also visit the island of San Nicola.
  • 8pm – Dinner in Vasto at il Trabucco Cungarelle
    • Trabucchi were used solely for fishing many years ago. This one was turned into a restaurant as well, but is still used for fishing.
      • We will be enjoying the freshest fish of the day!!!!

DAY 6 – WEDNESDAY JUNE 19

  • Starting our Tour of Abruzzo!
  • 9am – Drive to Vasto (Abbruzzo)
  • We will visit Vasto and Palazzo D’Avolos, then go to Vasto Marina for an aperitivo and a bit of a stroll and shopping.
  • After lunch, we head off to Chieti and settle into our rooms at the B&B-Locanda Tre Pini, where we will be staying for the rest of the tour.
    • Chieti is amongst the most ancient of Italian cities.
      • According to mythological legends, the city was founded in 1181 B.C. by the Homeric Greek hero Achilles and was named in honour of his mother.
      • During World War ll, Chieti was declared an open city (like Rome) and was not bombed by either side. It was the site of an infamous POW Camp for British and Commonwealth officers (PG 21) where its commandante, Barela, was later convicted of war crimes for his treatment of POWs. Imprisonment in wartime Italy was tough enough, but at some camps, conditions were much harder and the regime more brutal than at others.
    • After lunch, we will have a guided tour of Castelli, home of world famous hand-painted ceramics.
      • Castelli, located within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, is the capital of Abruzzo’s version of decorative ceramics, which were collected by the nobility of Europe for centuries.
        • Majolica is the name given to pottery with clear colored glazes, and these brightly colored hand-painted pieces are famous for their characteristic “pentacromia,” a five-color palette of yellow, green, blue, orange, and brown.
        • There are plenty of shops and factories to visit, and, if you would like, you can make your own Castelli masterpiece!
      • Drive back to Chieti
      • Free time until dinner

DAY 7 – THURSDAY JUNE 20

  • After breakfast drive to Civitella del Tronto (Teramo)
    • Civitella del Tronto is a remarkable cliff-top town in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga, a National Park of Italy.
      • It is home to the largest fortress in Italy and the second largest in Europe. The village is considered one of  the most beautiful in Italy.
      • We will visit the fortress and “La Ruetta“, the smallest street in Italy.
  • Lunch: Restaurant Colle Santamaria
  • After lunch, we will drive to Navelli, which is famous for Italy’s best and most fragrant saffron, and stroll through Borgo Medievale.
    • The saffron grown here has been awarded EU DOP status, as well as winning the international saffron ‘Golden Atom’ award.
  • Dinner will be a Cooking class with this authentic Saffron dishes.
  • Will also taste the very unique Gelato al Saffron!

DAY 8 – FRIDAY JUNE 21

  • After breakfast, we will have a guided tour of Chieti, the capital of Abruzzo, including its beautiful churches, Roman Temple and Archaeological Museum.
  • Vineyard visit and wine tasting at Maligni vineyards.
  • Visit Palazzo de Mayo.
  • Lunch at La Tavernetta with local digestivi.
  • After lunch, we will continue our tour of Chieti with its many shops and special points of interests.
    • We will also have a chance to visit Mokambo Caffe and learn how they make and toast their coffee beans … and have am Italian coffee tasting !!
  • Free Time and Street food or Enoteca.

DAY 9 – SATURDAY JUNE 22

  • After breakfast, we will drive to Sulmona, the capital of “confetti”.
    • Sulmona is a charming town located at the foot of the Majella and surrounded by mountains, where ancient history and a strong tradition for colorful sweets live together making it one of the most famous villages in Abruzzo.
    • It is famous for being the capital of sugared-coated almonds, known as “confetti” in Italian.
    • Its streets are adorned with colorful confetti bouquets, which you can buy in any innovative flavors like nutella, tiramisu, ricotta and pear, fruits of the forest, hazelnut, and more!
  • We will visit the famous Confetti Pelino for an overview and tasting, and have lots of opportunity to shop for beautiful confetti, among other things, in Sulmona.
  • Lunch will be at the famous Sulmona market and include an aperitivo and delicious local porchetta!
  • Free Time
  • Dinner – Pizza & Arrosticini

DAY 10- SUNDAY JUNE 23

  • After breakfast, we drive to the Rome airport and say farewell!

      • Tips are collected at the end of the tour and are distributed by Molise Cuisine to our wonderful Tour Guides, Servers and Driver.
    • Guides are all experts in their field who have studied Art & Architectural History of Molise and Abruzzo.

 

  • Cooking classes are a full immersion hands–on experience with a mix of food, culture, and practicality.
    • You will learn to make dishes which you can easily reproduce at your home, and you will amaze yourselves by creating fresh pastas and other traditional regional dishes … and, of course, pizza!!
    • The dishes that we will be making are those of traditional Abruzzese and Molisane dishes, such as Pallotte Cacio e Uova with Tomato Sauce, Cantucci Biscuits and also Chocolate Wine Cookies and Cake!
    • Molise produces 60% of all the truffles in Italy and we will be making Tagliolini with Truffle Cream.
    • We will also have a very unique cooking class in Abruzzo, focusing on its signature fragrant saffron!I
